TUPELO, Miss. — Air Force Technical Sergeant Robert Durrant was forced by an employee at his military base to remove a religiously themed flag from his residence for “violating community guidelines.” In addition to being told to remove the flag because it violated “all sorts of policies,” Durrant also received an email alleging a violation of his lease and another request to remove the flag within 48 hours. Durrant later requested permission to fly his flag in an email to the military housing office, explaining the religious basis for his request; he was later denied.
AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, believes that all men and women, whether in private or public, should be free to exercise their faith without hindrance from the government.
“When the government permits political, activist and foreign flags on a military base but targets a service member for expressing his Christian faith, that is viewpoint discrimination — plain and simple,” said AFA Action CEO Walker Wildmon. “This is not about maintaining order or enforcing neutrality; this is about deciding which beliefs and viewpoints are acceptable and which should be silenced. Our men and women in uniform swear an oath to the Constitution, and that oath does not require them to surrender their First Amendment rights when they enter the base gate. The military cannot function as an ideological gatekeeper while claiming to defend freedom. Instances like this are exactly why AFA Action will continue to prioritize religious liberty protections in 2026. If policies are weaponized to single out faith, those policies must change.”
