TUPELO, Miss. — A new memorial slated to be unveiled on the grounds of the Tennessee Capitol on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade’s end has prompted a debate among Tennesseans. Since the proposition of the memorial was first presented, democrats have strongly opposed it, while others have questioned whether placing the memorial on government grounds implies the state endorsing a specific view on abortion. Sen. Janice Bowling, a Republican who helped lead the effort, said, “We just want to honor the fact they were created in the image of God, they were human beings, and we need to show some reverence for humans and our fellow man.”
Walker Wildmon, CEO of AFA Action, the governmental affairs affiliate of the American Family Association, commented on the backlash that Tennessee’s memorial honoring unborn children has received:
“This memorial is a direct response to decades of government policy that treated unborn children as disposable,” said Wildmon. “Unveiling on the anniversary of Roe v. Wade’s fall is not accidental — it marks a turning point where states are finally allowed to recognize life instead of erasing it. Honoring unborn children does not ‘stigmatize’ anyone; it acknowledges the real human cost of laws that denied their existence for nearly 50 years. Public spaces already reflect countless political viewpoints, and recognizing unborn lives is no different. The real discomfort comes from confronting what abortion policy has done, not from remembering those who were lost.”
