The U.S. Senate is considering a proposed “compromise” that could send millions of dollars in healthcare subsidies to abortion providers.

What is Hyde?
First enacted in 1976 with broad bipartisan support, the Hyde Amendment bars federal funds from paying for abortion. For nearly five decades, Hyde has been the baseline safeguard ensuring Americans are not forced to subsidize abortion through federal health programs. Its impact is undeniable: more than 2.6 million Americans are alive today because of Hyde.
Why this matters now
Under a sell-out plan being considered by the U.S. Senate, more than $80 billion will be used to fund Obamacare expansion. Without explicit Hyde protections, at least some of these plans will pay for abortions under the “separate payment” scheme—an accounting trick first used by Democrats. It was designed to evade Hyde, not honor it.
The House has already passed this pro-abortion bill (H.R. 1834). The thing to understand is that as the private insurance market is collapsing, almost all health insurance is moving to the Obamacare exchanges. If there is no Hyde protection for Obamacare exchange funding, state taxpayers will be paying for abortions through the exchange.
First, it is ridiculous that Republicans are siding with Democrats to expand Obamacare. Second, even if a compromise plan is considered, Republicans must demand that Hyde Amendment protections apply to ALL insurance plans on the Obamacare exchanges.

Public opinion is clear: nearly 6 in 10 Americans—including 58 percent of Independents—oppose taxpayer funding of abortion.
